Lesson 6 : Never Stop Networking

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you- Dale Carnegie

Whether you are still searching for your “dream job” or you’ve already obtained a good starting opportunity, there is never an excuse to stop networking. There are PLENTY of things going on within a 25 mile radius of where you reside. Google clubs of your interest, log the meet up time and location into your phone, and Just DO IT.

I always found it similar to getting a beautiful woman’s number on campus “Hello, what’s your name, what field are you in, and where are you from?” This simple yet effective pickup line will highlight similarities and segue you into a more rewarding conversation. You will find that many events you attend are filled with people 10-20 years your senior, if this is uncomfortable, then you are in the right place. A freshman practicing with the varsity players usually ends up being the next star.

Trevor’s Takeaways:

  • Visit websites like meetup.com, order business cards (vistaprint.com)
  • Become more active on linkedin.com
  • Networking is a constant mindset, not solely reserved for “networking events”. Connections can happen in line at the grocery store, in an uber trip, or during an awkward elevator ride.
